Agri-Social Training and Reimagining Trinidad and Tobago (ASTARTT)
The Volunteer Center of Trinidad and Tobago (VCTT) is a registered NGO with a mission to Connect People, Fuel Hope & Collaborate for Change. This mission is pursued through a process of connecting volunteers to initiatives which support the Sustainable Development Goals. One of our strategic areas of support includes interventions which support Sustainable Development Goal number 2 – Zero Hunger.
Food security and Livelihood Development are growing challenges for low income households in Trinidad. In this vein, VCTT in partnership with WhyFarm, the POS City Corporation and East Port of Spain Development Company are joining hands to expand our pilot Community Garden / Food Park initiative launched in Gonzales in April 2018 to other communities in East Port of Spain including Sea Lots, Chinapoo and Basilon Street. These areas represented some of the most vulnerable in the country and hence, an intervention like this, will not only bring about food security benefits but also address the psychosocial needs of the community.
Through this intervention community members from East Port of Spain will be trained in home gardening, agripreneurship and building their professional and economic capacity through the production of value-added products from the community gardens. Products will be sold through weekend markets which will be set up in East Port of Spain on a monthly basis as well as through direct trade to supermarkets.
The total cost of our intervention including our pilot is valued at US $70, 895.52 with a request to GEF SGP to the value of US $50,000.00
