FSM: Enabling Effective Community Management of Parem's Marine Resources
FSM: Enabling Effective Community Management of Parem's Marine Resources
There will be 3 meetings on Parem and 2 meetings on Weno Island. The first meeting on Parem Island will be for the general stakeholders – villagers, resource owners, Municipal Government officials, and traditional leaders. The second meeting will be for reef owners mainly, but open to interested others. The third meeting will be mainly for reef owners, traditional leaders, and municipal government officials. At this meeting, we will find out which resource owners are willing to participate in managing reefs around Parem Island and Totiw.
The meetings on Weno Island will include Totiw owners who live on Weno and members of the Tiun MPA residing on Weno.

There is need to walk stakeholders through the objectives and activities for the project given the long delay between formation of Project Concept and the proposed implementation timetable as amended. CCS and the Brothers and Sisters Association of Tiun, a village-based organization on Parem managing the Tium MPA, will lead the workshop.

Project proposal will be done through a team approach among the Chuuk Department of Marine Resources, the Tiun MPA, and the Chuuk Conservation Society. CCS does most of the drafting with some of it to come from DMR. Tiun MPA will ensure project conforms to community decision(s) and takes full account of particular Parem issues affecting community cohesion and solidarity, such as reef property ownership and other customary norms for resource use and protection.
