Empowerment of East Hormozgan local communities against the COVID-19 impact with emphasis on biodiversity and protection of the endangered Persian Leopard
Empowerment of East Hormozgan local communities against the COVID-19 impact with emphasis on biodiversity and protection of the endangered Persian Leopard
Overall objective / activities to be implemented under the grant:
Common contagious diseases among domestic animals and wild ungulates as well as illegal hunting in recent years have led to a sharp decline in the population of goats and wild goats, rams, and ewes as the natural prey for Persian leopards in eastern Hormozgan Province. Thus, the rate of attacks on domestic livestock by leopards in the region is increasing significantly. On the other hand, due to the failure to compensate the damages incurred for livestock farmers, killing of the species for the sake of revenge or reducing the attacks has been increasing.
The main focus of this project is to reduce the conflict between the local community and the region’s leopards, motivating the former by way of reduced livestock losses.
The objectives expected from the implementation of this project is, training and awareness-raising among livestock farmers on the risks of failure to vaccinate their livestock, facilitating access for farmers to vaccines and veterinary services, modeling and training sustainable livestock farming based on local knowledge using high-efficiency methods, implementation of a series of practical and training measures to manage and prevent conflicts between livestock farmers and leopards, preventing decline in the population of wild ungulates due to common diseases between wild animals and domestic livestock (in order to preserve the biodiversity and subsequently conserve the habitat), study the impact of providing sustainable livelihood services to the local community through the change in approach and increased involvement of locals in preserving biodiversity and reducing environmental degradation
