Integrated Plastic Waste Management in Korle Klottey Municipality
Integrated Plastic Waste Management in Korle Klottey Municipality
Brief Description of the Problem
Most interventions in the plastic waste management have been the collection of plastic waste and dumping them at designated sites. The waste dumping sites in Osu, Circle, Ridge, and Asylum Down are overwhelmed by the volume of plastics. This has further created more pollution problems than was envisaged, thereby degrading the ecosystem further. The plastics that are scattered and exposed to sunlight, breaking down into small pieces, which are toxic chemicals. The plastic debris infiltrated into the soil and water sources without being able to be seen with the naked eye which may cause harm to the ecosystem.

This project aims to solve pollution problems that the ecosystem faces with regards to plastic pollution and to restore the watersheds of the community. The project will introduce sustainable waste collection and recycle them. This will reduce the volume of waste destined for landfills and incinerators, recycling, and composting to prevent toxins from leachate, landfill gas, and particulate matter from entering the environment and reduce the footprint of landfill areas

3. Project Objective
The main objective of this project is to train the youth on the sustainable collection of plastic waste and the processes of upcycling the waste into waste bins and other usable materials.

4. Project Results/Outputs
The project will produce two main outputs
i. Awareness among at least 100 households in Osu suburb of the Korle Klottey Municipality created on the risks of plastic waste pollution and ways of segregation.
ii. 100 Youth of Osu in the Korle Klottey Municipality trained on the upcycling of waste plastic bottles into waste bins and improved on waste management.
iii. Dissemination of the study results and operational guidelines for safe plastic waste management
5. Project Activities
Output 1: Awareness among at least 100 households in Osu suburb of the Korle Klottey Municipality created on the risks of plastic waste pollution and ways of segregation.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Community members will be engaged in awareness creation and education to make them understand and solve environmental problems and the effects of plastic waste pollution and how they are the major stakeholders in helping curb plastic waste collection. There is going to be a workstation for the training of stakeholders on the upcycling of plastic waste into several products that will benefit individual stakeholders
Notable Community Participation
Community youth members will be engaged in project. Youth in the municipality would be trained on basic means of using waste plastic bottles to produce waste bins (Citizen Science).
