Capacity Strengthening for Biodiversity Conservation and Enhanced livelihood security at Pebaseman Community Resource Management Area

The project involves the creation of Community Resource Management Area (CREMA) in Pebase to guide the restoration of and sustainable utilization of community lands to restore biodiversity; silvicultural training of farmers in natural regeneration, coppice management and enrichment planting; replanting of 200 ha of degraded lands within the CREMA with indigenous speicies; development and signing of memorandum of understanding between land owners and tenant farmers on security of tree tenure; formulation and implementation of participatory landuse plans by the indigenous farmers; establishment, management and utilization of of non-timber forest products; training of traditional health practitioners in the sustainable use and improved packaging and marketing of traditional herbal medicines; and the intodcution of alternative livelihood support to rural women's groups in the commercial production of wildlife, snails, mushroom, apiculture and wood carving from timber off-cuts to boost biodiversity.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

20 Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the Chief and other stakeholders concerning the tenure system of the trees planted and the land on which they have bee planted.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Farmers are making additional income from the management and utilization of non-timber forest products.

Notable Community Participation

From planning to the implementation the project the local communities have been in the driving seat. The formulation of landuse plan, signing of MOUs, creation of the CREMA all led by the local communitiy representatives.

Capacity - Building Component

Local farmers are being trainied in silvicultural management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization, book-keeping and commercilaization of forest products. Farmers have been introduced to banking, saving and investments at community levels.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Sustainable livelihood activities are considered at fulcrum around which forest management operates. All beneficiaries have been introduced to alternative livelihood activities.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The inception workshop was captured on the radio and national print media. Already a radio educational programme has been instituted create awareness of the project GEF/SGP activities.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The indigenous as well as tenant farmers are involved in the project

Policy Impact

The project objective of developing MOU on tree security has generated policy discussions on tree tenure system, between land owners and tenant farmers. The project is providing a solution to the tree tenancy issues in the country.

Gender Focus

Women groups are being assisted in enterprise development based on the sustainable utilization of biodiversity.

Project Results

50 farmers have been trained in nursery and seedlings/ saplings production. 5 nurseries have been establish in 5 communities namely kamaso,Sureso,Suaba,Supanso and Nkrankrom.

A leadership training has been organised for 6 farmers. the training also taught them basic administrative skills and financial management skills.these farmers are practicing the knowledge acquired and reaping its benefits.
About 75 farms have trees planted in them.

50 traditional medicine practitioners have been in proper management and judicious use of their skills.35 of this number have been duely registered.

Organic farming has been introduced to vegetable farmers(women groups inclusive).15 farmer
are putting the knowledge to practice.

22,000 seedlings have been produced from the nursery for planting.

200 ha of degraded area within the CREMA have been rehabilitated with indigenous tree species.

A savings account has been opened at the Amenfiman Rural Bank for the CREMA. This is to operate as a revolving fund, a micro credit facility for the women.
24 women are benefiting from the revolving fund.

Three co-operatives are engaged in small ruminant rearing.

Annual grasshopper invasion has been controlled by good farm practices as well as insecticide application.

A community workshop has been built.

10 farmers in 8 communities establish rabbit rearing centres.
