Lower branch of the river Babuna and canyon Pesti
Lower branch of the river Babuna and canyon Pesti
The river Babuna has numerous natural beauties that are specific for this region, as well as rich endemic flora and fauna. The project is directed towards the protection and sustainable use of the biodiversity of this eco-system. The biological diversity is directly threatened by the visitors, uneducated local population, and irrational use of natural resources of this unique place. Due to the special beauty of this river, The Council of the Municipality of Veles declared this region to be of special value and designated it as an attraction. In the ten years since, more and more visitors are coming, which has put further pressure on the ecosystem. This region is endowed with rich flora and fauna that is currently unprotected from external influences. There are ten endemic species in this ecosystem, some of which will disappear if action is not taken. Through this project we will make conditions to reduce the negative influence on biodiversity and the endemic flora, to ensure the sustainable use of the biodiversity and renewal of the endemic species of birds in this area. The river valley is also attractive for the part of population who have built illegal structures along the river that disrupt the environment and create further ecological problems. Another problem is local residents who lack an education and appreciation of the endemic species of birds and distort the balance of their living. The overall objective of this project is to protect the biological diversity and endemic species on the lower part of the river Babuna, while simultaneously promoting it as a tourist destination in an ecologically sensitive manner. More specifically: protection of the endangered species of birds – the Egyptian Vulture and Black Stork; use of biological diversity through arrangement and beautification of the river valley; and the improvement and of the Markova pestera (cave) that dates back to the 10th century.
