The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) provides financial and technical support to civil society and community-based organizations on innovative community-driven initiatives that address global environmental issues – such as biodiversity loss, climate change mitigation and adaptation, land degradation, international waters, and chemicals and waste management – while improving livelihoods. Le Programme de Microfinancements du Fonds pour l'Environnement Mondial (PMF-FEM), avec le soutien financier du FEM, a octroyé une subvention de 35000 dollars de 2021 à 2023 à l'ONG Nature Tropicale pour la conservation du lamantin d'Afrique. En plus des campagnes de sensibilisation menées auprès des écogardes, des forces de l'ordre, des pêcheurs et des magistrats, les femmes qui s'engagent dans la protection des lamantins d'Afrique bénéficient d'un soutien financier pour des activités génératrices de revenus à travers un mécanisme appelé « Epargne Pour le Changement ».
