SGP has been improving our Environmental Awareness in the rationalization of water use and the adaptation to climate change.
Mr. Ali Faisal Bosri
Grantee, Ma’la Community Group

How has SGP benefitted your organization and/or community?

"GEF SGP is the most well-known programme among Socotra Island' communities concerning environmental issues, it has been playing a leading role in involving communities, NGOs and CBOs in combating environmental problems relevant to GEF focal areas on Socotra Island.

GEF SGP has benefited our community in various themes. When SGP supported our project we gained lots of benefits,- we were able identify our problem, design the solution and given the support to implement solutions towards building 35 rain-water harvest tanks securing a water supply for both human and animals. Since the pastoral system is the back bone of the community's livelihood on Socotra, the project enables the community to harvest almost 4000 cubic meters of rain water that is mainly used for livestock. On one hand, peoples' livelihoods have improved as community stabilization has been promoted, which minimized local migration in search for water, and on the other hand, it reduced the workload for women fetching domestic water supply from distances far away.

SGP has been improving our Environmental Awareness in the rationalization of water use and the adaptation to climate change. Moreover, due to its partnership modality, SGP stimulated community contribution (in-kind and cash) towards project cost that eventually resulted in significant community cost sharing, great ownership of project achievement, and environmental sustainability. Now, we realize the importance of protecting our surrounding environment."
