Empowered Generation:Youth Action on Climate Change Through the GEF Small Grants Programme, 2013

This publication showcases over 10 case studies from our climate change portfolio in which youth have played a l,eading role. These projects can serve as a source of inspiration for expanding engagement with youth in addressing climate change. Employing a range of tools, young people have led and promoted the use of renewable energies, carbon footprint mapping, tree planting, disaster risk reduction measures, as well as communicated the urgency of taking action on climate change through environmental awareness raising events. In this process universities, schools, research organizations, media and government departments have played a critical role in partnering with youth organizations and scaling up their efforts.

A toolkit to support conservation by indigenous peoples and local communities: Building capacity and sharing knowledge for Indigenous Peoples and Community Conserved Territories and Areas -ICCAs

The toolkit includes a range of case studies to highlight the diversity of approaches that communities already use to manage their own areas, and to show how these lessons can be applied to form a “global learning network” of ICCAs.

Biodiversity Products From Latin America and the Caribbean

This publication captures and profiles the portfolio of biodiversity-based products, commodities and community experiences pertaining to the sustainable use, marketing and certification of biodiversity. The catalogue of biodiversity-based products from SGP's Latin American & Caribbean portfolio demonstrates the linkage between the sustainable use of biodiversity, community empowerment and poverty reduction. The catalogue is being replicated at the global level with the Progreso Network as part of an on-line platform.

Compact - Engaging Local Communities in Stewardship of Globally Significant Protected Areas

Since the year 2000, the Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation (COMPACT) initiative of the UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) and United Nations Foundation (UNF) has been working with communities near eight current/proposed World Heritage Sites in Africa, Asia, Meso-America and the Caribbean. Through extensive on-the-ground experience, and a participatory methodology that integrates a scientific approach, COMPACT is demonstrating that community-based initiatives can significantly increase the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation in globally significant protected areas while helping to improve local livelihoods.
