Nigerian EnviroNews published an article in marking the transition/renewal of the membership of the SGP National Steering Committee of Nigeria. The National Steering Committees are a key mechanism for programme direction and decision making on grants in the SGP and benefit from the technical inputs and tireless efforts of over a thousand highly qualified individuals globally, who serve in a voluntary capacity.
In his remarks the UNDP Country Director draws attention to SGP’s transparent and decentralized structure and grassroots mobilization efforts through which “SGP complements UNDP national policy support programmes with the community initiatives that support advocacy and campaigns to feed into national policy development processes”. The Director and GEF Operational Focal Point (OFP) in the Federal Ministry of Environment, Amos Tanko Ibrahim, expresses appreciation of the NGOs/CBOs relationship with the ministry and GEF-SGP, and refers to the SGP as the “GEF’s heart and our ministry’s heart too” for the role it plays in sharing environmental benefits with poor and marginalized communities.
