Plastic recycling - Reduction of wood consumption
Plastic recycling - Reduction of wood consumption
The grant intended to support community initiatives to recycle plastic bags and other used plastic products to reduce wood consumption, prevent environmental pollution and damages that are caused by these waste products, and to create an income-generating workplace by producinga number of recycled products. A community group named ?Plastic bags Nuhurlul?, comprising 18 members in Darkhan town was formed to implement a GEF SGP grant project ?Plastic wastes to save/replace wood? in 2006.

During the second half of 2006 which is the project implementation period, the project has achieved tremendous results. The project started with cleaning up some 22500 ha. area near Darkhan from plastic bags and wastes. The plastics collected from this area only were recycled to make products of US$ 22,000. Thereafter, community activities on clean-up and collection of plastics were rapidly spread to neighboring sums and aimags. The plastic recycling by this community has grown to a very beneficial business so that over 150 individuals were involved within the last 4 months of project implementation and earned US$ 73,200. Over the only last 6 months the 18 employees of the community received US$ 18,470 as salary which means everybody got US $171 in average that doubles a government employee?s monthly earning. Within 6 months of existence, the Nuhurlul has managed to make 8 types of products of recycled plastics. As orders for their products have rapidly grown, the Nuhulul has transformed from March 2007 to a company named ?San Orgyu?. The Head of the community has received a number of provincial level awards at the end of 2006.
