The project assisted the group of eco divers to establish their NGO (JREDS), which is now assuming a very important role in marine ecology protection in Aqaba Gulf. JREDS was formed as the first NGO concerned with the protection of the Red Sea Unique Ecology. The project activities included the initiation of a continuous coral reef monitoring programme followed by an intensive public information and awareness campaign.

The project invited an international research vessel, which took data collected by the project and used it as part of a global survey of the coral reefs around the world. Several exhibits were organized; annual clean-up dives are still conducted. The NGO managed to secure additional funding to sustain the project beyond proposed duration. The NGO is currently implementing several projects related to marine ecosystems and involving local communities, and assisting other groups in Aqaba in their marine biodiversity conservation efforts.

The project activities continued long after project completion, and monitoring of the marine environment has become part of the duties of the legal authority in the Gulf of Aqaba. In addition, project activities were closely linked with a large WB GEF project.
