Combating Land Degradation & Decline in Soil Productivity
Combating Land Degradation & Decline in Soil Productivity
Kageye members in the recent past noted with serious concern the continuous bad trend in Wakiso District of:
? Land degradation through surface run-offs along roads and farms. The run-offs have resulted into a semi-productive land since the fertile topsoils are washed away into valleys ending up to local rivers, namely Kageye Rubigi and Namatovu. These local rivers eventually converge into River Mayanja which also carries the collected silt into river Nile in Lake Kyoga.
? Biodiversity loss ? Disappearance of high canopy trees like Mvule, Cinnamonum (Budalasini), Maesopsis eminii (Musizi) and Podocapus that used to be a habitat for the now endangered bird species in particular the African grey parrot and horn-bills. This has also contributed to air pollution due to a tremendous reduction of carbon dioxide (Co2) sinks resulting into changes in the local micro-climate.

The project is to improve on the beneficiaries? livelihoods through ecological restoration of the degraded land along roads and reverse the current biodiversity loss/local climate change through tree planting in road reserves.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Local capacity management will be handled through their participation in sensitisation programmes, tree nursery beds? preparations and management, tree planting/management and evaluation of the project after two years.
Notable Community Participation
Local people?s (farmers) capacity to manage land degradation, conserve Biodiversity, contribute positively to climate change and Protection of International waters through local prevention of silt running into local rivers, will be strengthened in the process through their participation in sensitisation programmes, tree nursery beds? preparations and management, tree planting/management and evaluation of the project after two years. The project however will be on-going among the initial two hundred (200) project participants and one hundred and sixty (160) members living along Wakiso Town Council and Kawanda to whom the project will be replicated after the project?s period.
