Beekeeping and honey production in Covane Community for human development and environmental protection
This project is being implemented in Covane Community, District of Mabote, Inhambane Province, by CARITAS Moçambicana together with L.V.I.A. (partner Italian NGO on environmental related activities). The entire region is facing serious draught that limits farming. The conservation and diversified use of non-timber forest products seems to be an important warranty for food security of surrounding settlements. Due to the largest number of beekeepers, and the possibility to take advantage of the Honey-House that Fruitimel Lda enterprise will soon establish at Maculuve (close to Covane community), the project aims to build capacity of beekeepers to be environmentally responsible and able to diversify their activities, increasing food and economic security of their families. Also the project aims to provide draught resistant fruitrees (like mangos and guavas) that will also be important to bee?s nectar harvest, and diversification of human diet supplement.
This project aims to train 20 beekeepers, and beside these beekeepers other community members will be hired to produce beehives, and its shelters. Direct project beneficiaries are around 500 community members.
This project also fits within the management and development plan of Zinave National Park, that establishes local communities as an important partner for biodiversity conservation, and sees the small scale income generation projects as a tool to engage local communities in the collaborative management of the national park.
