Building and installing improved firewood stoves; and establishing a tree nursery for reforesting alder, Chirantodendrum pentadactilum and pine trees, in Cantón Tohamán, Sibinal, San Marcos, Guatemala
The project consists of the building and installment, by community members with the help of a builder, of 41 improved firewood stoves to better the health situation and environmental condition of the Tohamán community. A tree nursery will be established, as to reforest alder, the endemic and threatened Chirantodendrum pentadactilum tree and pine trees.
The project benficiaries will also receive training in the building and use of the stoves, forest management and reforestation, natural disasters, soil conservation and organic insecticides. The project includes a commercialisation component for tree seedlings produced in the tree nursery.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Over 60% of group members are women. Since women are the members of family that most use stoves, they will accrue the greatest health benefits.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The community will benefit from a cleaner environment, through the stoves and reforestation. Human capital will be strengthened both through better health conditions and acquired know-how. Lesser use of wood and the sales from tree seedlings will better the local economy.
