Based on the outputs of the project, it is hoped that the state government of Sarawak and possibly, the Federal government of Malaysia, would enact necessary policies for the conservation and sustainable use of the rapidly dwindling stocks of wild bamboo.
Capacity building training workshops and seminars would be held over a period of 18 months to increase the capability and skills of the local community to implement the project successfully.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Since the chairman of REDEEMS maintains close links with politians and other authorities in Sarawak state government, it was possible for the local community of Singai to have free access to the communal land which constitutes the project site. Likewise due with the assistance of REDEEMS, the local community was able to enjoy co-financing from state government and private sector to cover the non-geffable components of the project, eg. building access road and internal infrastucture.
Notable Community Participation
The active involvement and participation of the local community is recognised by REDEEMS to be critical in ensuring the project's sucess and sustainability. REDEEMS would therefore ensure the following,
i. that the project and its activities are fully designed to gain the support of the local community by contributing to their own development and progress,
ii. that local community leaders would undertake activities to identify, organise and lead the local community in all aspects of the project.
iii. that senior citizens and elders from the local community would be engaged in teaching and passing on their skills in handicarft making as well as in identifying bamboo species and recording them in their own languages.
iv. that youth and school leavers and unemployed graduates from the local community would be encouraged to participate in the project both by learning the necessary skills and experience and also to earn some income for them.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
The entire community who will be involved in all aspects of the project would come from the Bisingai local community of indigenous peoples.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The sustainable livelihood components of the project would involve the following;
i. appointment of a coordinator from amongst the retired and experienced Bisingai community to encourage and coordinate the project thereby giving the local community a better sense of pride and ownership,
ii. all local species of bamboo that can be found in and around the area would be collected and planted in the park, with emphasis on species that are much more useful for handicraft making to increase the availability of raw materials,
iii. establishing a handicraft centre, equipped with the necessary tools for training and implementation and later for the commercial production of handicraft. The centre is to be built by local contarctors with funding from the state government and guidance from the Sarawak Handicraft Council.
iv. once suitable training has been conducted for sufficient participants, they would enter into the commercial production of bamboo based handicrafts, both at the centre and also at their own homes.
v. upon the completion of the production of bamboo handicrafts, REDEEMS will assist the local community in promoting and marketing them locally, nationally and possibly to world markets through the internet.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The use of internet by REDEEMS to publicise the activities and outputs of the project would not only increase greater public awareness on the significance of bamboo but also enhance the possibility of the local community to be able to sell their bamboo handicrafts to markets outside Malaysia.
Gender Focus
Training would also be provided to women to undertake the bamboo handicraft activities in their own homes, rather than at the centre, especially for women who cannot afford to leave their homes due to domestic commitments.
Project Results
Expected project's result as indicated in the project proposal include the following;
- Communal land no longer remain idle but become productive to harness available resources,
- Bamboo Botanical Park will be established for conservation work, sources of handicraft, as tourist product, source of employment in the rural areas,
- Getting communities to be involved in own development,
- Improve income of women folk by at least RM350.00 per month,
- Foster better unity and understanding and cooperation between members and parties involved through working together for common goal, and
- Targeted for the project to generate gross annual revenue of RM500,000 once the project matures.
Further it is also expected that by the the end of the project the activities and outputs of the project and of its significance would be recognised both locally and nationally, with possible policy changes that support the conservation and sustainable use of endangered bamboo species.
