Sustainable practices for wasteland development, water harvesting and livelihood generation through community dynamism
Palamau in Jharkhand is famous for its rich biodiversity. The Palamau plateau extends over an area of 127.49 km, which is thickly forested. Only 26 percent area is under net sown and about 6949 hectares is cultivable wasteland. It is one of the most backward areas in the country with a large tribal population. SESA has been working in the area since 1992 with the objective of conservation and promotion of natural and cultural heritage. The organization has been working with women and entrepreneurship development, providing traditional healthcare and sanitation. The goal of the project is to undertake an action oriented demonstration programme involving the community in the three target villages for wasteland reclamation, rainwater harvesting and livelihood generation. The project will develop and protect the wastelands through rainwater harvesting, and increasing green cover in the unutilized barren lands along with livelihood generation through pisciculture, vermin composting and increasing soil fertility.
