Capacity Building of Community for environmentally sound and sustained agricultureal practice (Madagaskar Technique) for the conservation of 250 local indigenous Rice Verties in Bastar Region of Chhattisgarh
Darohar Samiti initially worked with the traditional craftsmen of Bastar region. While working with these communities the organization realized that the loss of biodiversity in the region was an issue of serious concern. In 1995, with the participation of local communities initiated local action programme to conserve indigenous seed varieties. The members of the organization are basically farmers. The goal of the project is in-situ conservation of 250 indigenous varieties of rice through awareness generation about agriculture related traditional knowledge, establishment of seed bank at the farm level and promotion of environmentally sound and sustained farming techniques like the Madagascar Techniques. The project will help in conservation and propagation of rice. Use of rice intensification technique will help farmers in getting better yields from traditional varieties. Thus implementation of the project would help in retaining organic agricultural techniques. The seed banks will help in conservation of the indigenous gene pool for rice. Women SHGs will be formed in the villages and initial seeds will be provided to the SHGs to build the farm level seed banks.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
As part of the proposed project, linkages with experts will be strengthened, for capacity building on the System of Rice Intensification. Through the exposure visits, the agency intends to interact with other SGP partners and share their experiences such as those of Dharamitra in Wardha and of Prayas in Konkan region of Maharashtra. The agency would also link with the State Agricultural Universities of CG and MP for sharing rice varieties.
Replication of project activities
Chhattisgarh is called the ?rice bowl? of India and is recognized as having a wealth of rice germplasm. The experiences and from the project can benefit the entire state as well as other rice growing areas in the country, and thus there is a great scope for replicability. The processes proposed to achieve the results are not difficult. The financial implications for replication or scaling-up have to be studied, but these would likely be possible through existing schemes for tribal welfare and rural development.
