Promoting biodiversity conservation through local community based eco-tourism
The main goal of the Kathotia Environment Management plan is to develop the Kathotia village in Sehore Forest Division as an eco tourism destination to provide tourism based sustainable livelihoods for poverty alleviation and forest conservation. The project has adopted a forestry based tourism approach focusing on education, eco tourism, cultural and rural tourism and sports based tourism. Increase in livelihood opportunities through this approach will be an incentive for the community for conservation. The area is endowed with natural and cultural assets to develop it as a suitable destination for eco tourism. The area is sporadically used for rappelling and rock climbing. The river flowing through the area is also conducive for adventure sports. The project has two major components:
Conservation Tourism: The Kathotia eco tourism will be community controlled and will aim at environmental and cultural education. Rules of conduct will be developed for the trekking trails and rock climbing and tourists will be sensitized about the same. A reference material gallery and interpretation centre on tribal heritage will be developed. Products based on NTFPs will be developed and sold to tourists through the interpretation centre
Sustainable Development: Camping huts shall be designed to utilize local resources and construction techniques. The local communities will manage these enterprises. NTFP based enterprises will be developed by mobilizing and training local women. These women will be formed into groups and linked to the banks, subsequently; the interpretation centre will be used as a point to sell their products to the tourists
