Strengthening of Community Initiated Conservation, Livelihoods and Development Initiatives on the Local Biodiversity
The Rural Technology & Development Centre (RTDC) is a non-government organization founded in 1988, has been working on Local Slef-Governance and Panchyati Raj Institutions (PRIs) since 1992. The goal of the project is to develop a local awareness generation cum demonstration centre which would contribute in orienting the local community to take up new and innovative conservation methods, livelihoods related interventions like floriculture, organic vegetable cultivation, vermin composting, NADEP and improved horticultural crops. Using the recent changes in the logical framework, initiate the creation of community institutions and mechanisms for the conservation, management and expansion of forest / common land based livelihoods resources like fodder and mechanical plants of commercial importance.

Notable Community Participation
? The project strategy involves strategizing for, implementing and monitoring the proposed interventions in consonance with the community needs and those of other relevant stakeholders.
? The land and the building for the demonstration cum awareness centre, is being provided by the local community.
? The component on forest management involves an intensive process of planning by the local communities for the management of their forest resources and investment in the form of free labour and social fencing mechanisms. These approaches would ensure enhanced community stakes in the project outcomes and contribute to the long term sustainability.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
As more and more communities achieve a balance between development, livelihoods and ecology, they shall contribute in making a positive environmental impact through improved vegetation, resurgent wildlife, reduced soil erosion, climate control and improved asthetics. The success of this pilot initiative in community forest management, local conservation methods shall have the way for other such initiatives through this.
