Restoration of Biodiversity of the Ratangiri Hill by Regeneration of the scared groves, afforestation and water harvesting through Community led approaches
M.R.Morarka-GDC Rural Research Foundation, a not-for-profit voluntary organization was set up in 1993 to create wealth for the nation through innovations in resource management and capacity building of the people. It therefore began with the philosophy of encouraging new initiatives, assisting communities to create wealth and motivating professionals to work for voluntary sector. Implementing agency for the above project is The Braj Foundation which is working on an integrated program of Braj Development which comprises of the restoration of hundreds of ancient water tanks, revival of traditional groves, regeneration of over 18000 acre of barren hill slopes into lush green pasture lands and dense forests, resurrection of river Yamuna by dredging, animal husbandry, dairy, organic farming, rural tourism etc. The goal of the project is overall improvement in the ecosystem of the Ranagiri hill and environs with the objective of regenerating the hill slopes as the traditional pasture lands, present a viable alternative to mindless mining which is fast disturbing the ecological balance of the region and make the entire Ratnagiri hill lush-green over a period of 3 years and a center of attract for eco-tourism.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
A hill management committee would be formulated in every village, which would be benefited from the aforementioned hill. This committee would comprise of village elders and educated youth who would be responsible of managing the state of affairs. Project will promote formation of Local self-help groups and committees on the basis of local kinship and common interest of its members and to link them with banks and other sources. The members of the local community will be sent by the organization to exposure visits to Gujarat for field training. It will provide help in orientating them further so that they will help in implementation and motivating the other villagers.
Policy Impact
Local village Panchayat has already been given its consent to provide support to the organization in implementing the programme. The NGO is committed to establish network of these people-village institutions with govt. and outside agencies for drawing sustainable resource management.
