Development of an Environmentally Benign and Economically Viable Rice Production System.
Development of an Environmentally Benign and Economically Viable Rice Production System.
The goal of the project is to enhance rural food security through introduction of a rice production system that ensures high productivity at significantly low water requirements. Community action and participatory technology development will be promoted for local adoption of the improved method of rice cultivation. The technology will be promoted through participatory on-farm trials and sustainable means of water storage, delivery and disposal and the structures necessary for practice of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in a micro-watershed will be developed. Rice production under moist aerobic soil will also alleviate methane emission.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
? An environmentally friendly rice production system in a watershed will be established nearly doubling the rice productivity in the local area where project is conducted. ? Model water storage, delivery and disposal systems applicable to small watersheds used for rice production; a replicable model. ? A package of practices for SRI, modified to suit local conditions of the project area will be facilitated for adoption by farmers to set practices to grow rice with minimum amount of water.
Capacity - Building Component
A mechanism of cooperative management of rice paddies of a contiguous area already exists at the local level. The new technology would be incorporated into this and thus sustainability would be ensured. The community would maintain the facilities installed under the proposed project and this would ensure its management. Training will be provided for this purpose through organizing a workshop with intensive sessions on the technology for the stakeholders.
