Demonstration of Biogas Production in two villages of Kahramanmaras
Biogas is a combustible and colorless gas which is derived from the breakdown of organic compounds in an anaerobic (no oxygen) environment. It can be used as an alternative to natural gas and LPG. The Kahramanmaras Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the cooperation of Sütçü İmam University and with the support of The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) have built two biogas pilot installation of 15 m³ capacity in Ayaklıcaoluk and Elmalar Villages in Kahramanmaras.
The first installation in Ayaklıcaoluk, which is a first in Turkey after 1980s, is being used in three houses where no more LPG supply needed. Moreover, in houses where the stove system is set, heating is provided without the need of using wood, coal or electricity.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
The project includes an important capacity building component and is particularly important in the Turkish context as there is a widely accepted prejudice in Turkey towards biogas plants. The installations created in the 1970s has failed miserably in Turkey and SGP with two new biogas projects is aiming to change this negative attitude towards the use of biomass and biogass in Turkey. The dissemination of information and the hands on training foreseen in this project will help demonstrating the people in this field that biogas can work in Turkey.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project, although not offering a sustainable livelihood opportunity per se, will demonstrate to the locals its benefits in terms of reduced cost for their fuel and also the provision of natural fertilisers as a by-product of the process.
