Ecological Park in Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala

This project is the first phase in the development of the Coatepeque Ecological Park, that will further environmental education, conservation of species, research and recreation. This project consists in the training of the Asociación Amigos del Bosque members in information dissemination on the park, creating networks with the private sector, schools, neighbouring communities and the population at large to promote the construction of the park and gain support for the following phases of the Ecological Park project.
This first phase includes the building of the boundaries of the park; 3 kms of paths; 3 bridges to cross the river located in the park; the creation of a social or camping area; building a shop and sanitary services.
There will also be a publicity campaign on the park and the educational activities that will be held there.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Both men and women will be involved in all stages of the project.

The educational elements of the project will raise general environmental awareness.

Capacity - Building Component

The implementing organisation will be trained and both school children and community members will gain skills through educational activities.

Notable Community Participation

The local community will be involved in building the park, as well as in educational and recreational activities. Schools will be particularly active in all phases of the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The park will contribute to the environmental and social capital of the local community.

Project sustainability

There will be an entrance fee to the park, a charge for use of camping facilities and profits from the shop that will be used to sustain the project. Further income-generating activities are planned for the future.

Project Results

The local community has been adequately contacted and informed on the Ecological Park, what it provides, how it can be reached and where to get more information. There is information on potential funders and volunteers.
The Asociación Amigos del Bosque have been trained in, and are carrying out, information dissemination on the park.
6 seminars will have been held, with different stakeholders (including local businesses, neighbouring communities, local schools, local organisations, media) on the park and how they can get involved in it. 50 additional talks will have been held to attract a minimum of 30 interested organisations or entities. These different entities will be invited to visit the park and will be given guided tours.
The park boundaries will have been built, along with 3 kms of paths, ecological bathrooms, 3 bridges, trash cans, a shop and a social area. An entry charge will be implemented, as well as a charge for camping services. Profits will be gained from the shop.
