The low-lying coastal communities in Marromeu and Nhaminga in Sofala province are vulnerable to sea level rise and cyclic floods. Consequently, water channels feeding agricultural land and drinking water supplies are unreliable. Soil salinization decreases the fertility of the soil and the frequency of floods is threatening the safety of the drinking water supply due to pollution. This project aims to reinforce the capacity of the community based organization, ANADEMO, to conserve, use and manage water in a sustainable way. The project will protect biodiversity by introducing technologies that can limit pollution and salinization of soils. Livelihood supporting activities will be facilitated by reducing the time and energy that communities currently spend fetching water each day. Environmental education campaigns will promote enthusiasm for natural resources, encouraging long-term commitment to water and environmental management schemes introduced by the project.
