Solar Bicycle Improvement Research
Solar Bicycle Improvement Research
This solar bicycle development research project is a new innovation not only for SGP but Cambodia as a whole. The main objectives of the project are that by the end of its 6 month duration two new models of solar bicycles, which will be created using diverse technologies from Japan and China, will be introduced to the public and will increase awareness of the importance of environmental issues and protection within Cambodia.
Aside from creating two new models of solar bicycles for transportation purposes they will also be used for charging cell phones or powering a laptop or a light.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
At the end of this research project the three solar bicycle models will be on display at LOCAB and at UNDP-GEF/SGP and orders will be accepted from customers. Many orders have already been placed but LOCAB is incapable of fulfilling the orders due lack of start up capital and workshop space to make the solar bikes. With success this year in their research, LOCAB will request another grant the following year from UNDP-GEF/SGP to expand the project and to train other Cambodians in producing the bicycles. LOCAB will then have people working in the workshop to produce solar bikes and others to sell them in the market. Moreover, this continuity is based on internal management of the organization, fund raising from other donors, and income generation of the organization. LOCAB will do its best to strengthen and improve performance and financial management of the organization. The sustainability of LOCAB after the project grant has ended will come partially from fees charged for training in making the solar bicycles. The organization will charge US $50 per students in addition to donor support of the project. Another aspect to ensure sustainability will come from the profit of the bicycles from sales after its introduction to public. Based on calculations one solar bike will cost $ 271 to make and will be sold at cost up $ 320 which will bring a profit of $49 per bike. If solar panels can be purchased at a cheaper rate then the bicycles will be less expensive. Both income and benefits from the bicycle will automatically fund the organization to produce more bicycles and to improve the technology.
Capacity - Building Component
LOCAB also has many other training areas which it can charge a fee for participation, including security systems for homes, factories and vehicles, wind power, soap making, natural ice cream, bee keeping and more.
