Integrated Development Approach to Combat Environmental Degradation on Resettlement Areas of Adillie Bisse, Adillie Keso and Adillie Haro kebeles

The overall goal of the project is to combat environmental degradation and to improve the environmental values of the project area as well as contribute towards food security and livelihoods of the resettlers through integrated approach and promoting sustainable natural resources management and then to sustain the benefits for the coming generation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

An interactive training will be given both for the community and government staff. The training will include topics such as integrated catchment/watershed based natural resource management with a focus on in-situ soil and water conservation, agroforestry practices, alternative energy sources and Gender & Development.

Policy Impact

Due to the nature of the project which call the concerted effort of the community, it will help the local government to devise and implement the policy to fill the impedements which are critical for sustainable livelihood.

From the discussion made with the community, it is expected that the community will participate through labor and time input amounting to US$ 8241.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Regarding awareness on the global environment, the local community and government will be given training on the effect of climate change, loss of biodiversity and impact of land degradation that will obviously have a negative impact on the livehihood of the community.

Similar activities were being practiced by the adjacent areas.

Project sustainability

The agro-forestry practices (growing fruit trees & vegetables, compost making) were adopted by the resettlers to continue in conserving the natural resources in their areas in future.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project also focuses on improving overall income and living standards of the resettlers through increasing agricultural production and diversification of livelihood bases

Gender Focus

The project will give due attention to women groups and in any project activity 30% of the beneficiaries involved will be women. Women play a critical role in natural resource management and their role in creating momentum towards better natural resource management is vital. Women-headed households will be given due attention during project implementation. In all training sessions, workshops and intervention activities the participation of women groups will be ensured. EWNRA has adopted a policy to include a minimum of 30% of women participants from the beginning of all project activities.

This intervention enabled the community to showcase what has been accomplished through GEF grants and opened rooms for them to look for other resources to scale up the activities.

Project Results

1. Project start-up workshop conducted; baseline survey carried out.

2. In contribution to conservation of biological diversity and combating land degradation, the following were accomplished:

- Participatory land rehabilitation through biophysical soil & water conservation: construction of 481 kms of Fanya Juu, 57.4kms of soil bund, 28.5 kms of waterway and 32.44kms of cutoff drain as well as raising & planting of 38,000 vetiver grass clumps were done.
- Introduction & distribution of 1054 fuel saving stoves done.
- Woodlots established & 52,900 tree seedlings were raised & planted.
- Distribution of technical materials (hand tools) for soil & water conservation activities was done.

3. To improve overall incomes and living standards of the resettlers through increased agricultural production, the following were undertaken:

- Adoption of agro-forestry practices by 218 resettlers
- Growing & planing of 10,000 fruit tree seedlings by the resettlers
- Distribution of 50kgs of vegetable seeds to the resettlers
- Seedling production was contracted to 16 farmers
- 165.5 m3 of compost was prepared

4. In light of building capacity of the resettlers and gov't offices,the following trainings were given

- on knowledge & skills integrated NRMwas given to 163 resettlers (52 females)
- on strengthening CBOs was given to 57 local gov't officials (20 female)
- on Agro-forestry and compost making was given to 70 resettlers (24 female)
- on capacity building within gov't offices was given to 10 gov't staff members (7 Development Agents and 3 experts)

5. Documentation:
