Higali Household Energy Conservation and Community Based Solar Powered Water Supply Project

The project aims at reducing deforestation by applying a sustainable rate of utilization of the fuel wood; to improve access to safe drinking water and use of improved fuel saving stove; to increase the knowledge of Higali community and relevant local government personnel on future energy and environmental crisis that would occur if not acted up on in a sustainable way and improve the health and life style of the community specially the women and children through provision and introduction of water, sanitation and energy awareness creation program.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Environmental awareness at local level, kebele administration, wereda and zonal level is also considered in the projects

Project sustainability

The community and local government in the project area has taken over the project and will manage it in a concentrated effort.

Notable Community Participation

The participation of the community both in terms of generating ideas and labour contribution to the implementation of the project is considered during prepartion of the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project considers improving the livelihood of the community through cooking stove production to generate income for poor households.

Capacity - Building Component

The project focuses on capaicity building of the community in terms of training and awareness raising related environmental issues and also how to handle the projects

The project is believed to bring policy impact by showing the local government bodies the cosequences of the improper natural resources management.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project is implemented in the resettlemnt area and the people are relocated from drought prone area and the people are marginalized including women, children and old people.

Project Results

? Awareness creation sessions were organized on NRM, water & sanitation and biomass energy use and their overall effect on human health and life style involving gov?t officials and the community.

? Installation of solar pump is done resulting in access to safe water for the community to be used for both nursery site and drinking. A committee was established from the community for the water management. A training on the water system management was given to the committee and community at large.

? Training conducted on production of fuel saving stove and demo session afterwards on installation of these stoves was organized to the community by the early adopters of this technology.
