Protecion of a Vulnerable Forestland through Grassrotts Community Participation

The project involves awareness creation and state/community partnership; formation of community central management committee, formation of byelaws to govern the community activities; establishment of livelihood programs for bee keeping; arrange central seedling nursery for productions of various seedlings of indigenous and fruit trees, coffee and forages; GIS mapping to identify the flora and fauna of the forest including threatened species; and eco tourism to carry out rehabilitation works in the forest through training.

Project Results

* Awareness has been created through training sessions on NRM, land degradation, beehive development, seedling production and Eco-tourism
* 426527 different type of indigenous and exotic seedlings were produced which were distributed to schools, churches, mosques, model farms and households
* High yield Mareko Fana pepper has been introduced to the area
* 2 tukuls for eco-tourism were constructed and landless farmers will benefit from the profits
* A spring with the capacity to produce 240 litres of water per day has been developed for the Tukuls and wild animals
* 15 m3 construction for collecting water has been established
* 800 meters of water pipe has been constructed
* 2 days training has been given to 30 young landless farmers.
* The Almsaga forest has been restored through project activities aimed to reduce land degradation.
* Introduction of modern beekeeping system & establishment of a production spot for honey
* Establishment of self managed (private) nursery sites by the community members.
