New Solution to old Problem: Rogda Community Based Environmental Rehabilitation and Protection Project

This project involves activities focusing on awareness raising on environmental problems; galley treatment, i.e, treating farm areas which are heavily affected by galley erosion through gabion development; building the technical capacity of steering committees and selected active farmers on environmental problems, establishing and supporting environmental school clubs to participate in the project to contribute towards environmental protection and community education; nurturing seedlings of various types of fruit trees, indigenous trees and grasses; introducing Moringa tree (Shifara); preparation of organic compost for agro forestry trees development and assisting selected farmers in making appropriate traces on their farm land; planting grasses of various species on erosion affected farm lands

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Activities on soil protection are expected to be implemented on farmlands of individual farmers that will be their own properties and farmers will take care of the developed systems and replicate it in other areas. To this end trainings are to be given to farmers on the skills of protecting soil erosion in order to enhance their capacity on this area.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Skill training and seed money will be given for about 140 target groups so as to help them start small businesses in order to bring continuted improvement in their livelihood.

Gender Focus

The NGO will organize and provide training for poor women through the strategy of Self Help Group (SHG) to assist them work in group for their socio-economic empowerment.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The achievement of the project objectives will be a learning ground in the target community and beyond in the efforts of tackling the global climatic change. In addition, The impacts of maintaining the natural environment will contribute to enhance normal global ecosystem and biodiversity.

Notable Community Participation

The community participates through contribution amounting to US$ 3,045.98.

The egnagement of the NGO in this particular project will significantly support execution of the agricultural led industrialization of the government policy that promotes development of rural society

Project Results

? Nursery operational sites were made functional for the preparation and operation of various seedlings. The seedlings of moringa, eucalyptus tree, indigenous and fruit trees were prepared by the community members.

? Heavily eroded farmlands were treated and the protection mannet & methods were demonstrated for future management

? The Gumuz community at the nursery stations have practiced the production of horticultural seedlings and plantation for their temporary households? consumption.

? The concept of environmental rehabilitation has led some of the community members to the scheme of food security and income generation. Alert & watchful community members have started preparing their own nursery and seedling sites for their future prospective.

? Some active and effective farmers have started preparing compost and use it on their own farmlands.
