Promotion of the Use of Clean and Renewable Energy Resources in Gokceada by Photovoltaic Illumination
Promotion of the Use of Clean and Renewable Energy Resources in Gokceada by Photovoltaic Illumination
The project aims to demonstrate the use of photovoltaic illumination in the town centre of Gokceada. Gokceada is the largest island aroud the Turkish coast, which receives its electricity from the main land and is subject to severe weather conditions and interruptions in power. The island has great potential for solar and wind power use and demonstration. The project consists of installing photovoltaic lamps into the town square and demonstrate the public the use of solar power in illumination and the level of energy obtained as well as the level of emmissions reduced. Although there are experimental demonstrations here and there in universities, this is the first demonstration in Turkey that is for the use of the public. The project also concentrates on the dissemination of this experience with a view to promote its replication.
The project implemented in cooperation with the Gökçeada Municipality, with technical support of the Aegean University Solar Energy Institute and with the financial support of the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) is expected to produce of at least 6400Wh electric energy with the 2000Wp photovoltaic cells and to decrease at least 1.2 ton of CO2 emissions.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The project has a strong publıc awareness component as it will be the first demonstration of photovolatic illumination in Turkey. The locality of the project is also very important as the negihbouring island, Bozcaada is famous for its wind turbines, the demonstration of another renewable energy resource will attract serious attention.
