Energy Conservation and Contribution to Forest Conservation Via Heat Insulation in Houses in Ardahan Yenikoy Village
Energy Conservation and Contribution to Forest Conservation Via Heat Insulation in Houses in Ardahan Yenikoy Village
Yenikoy Village in the Gole district of Ardahan is positioned in the highest peak of the Yalnizcam forests. Due to the high altitude of 2400m of the village, the temperatures in the winter fall to -30˚ C. Approximately 30 tons of fuelwood per household is consumed annually. In Yenikoy house walls are made of stones and roofs are of logs and adobe. While this may serve as an advantage during summer as it helps isolate the heat, during winter when the roofs get wet, it results in an increased loss of heat. In addition the leaking water threatens the quality of life and health of inhabitants; moreover accelerates the rotting of the logs supporting the roof, resulting in the need of new logs every five years. Yenikoy Village Cooperative supported by GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) and in cooperation with ORKOOP covers the roof of 56 houses by sheet iron and various insulation materials. It is expected that the project will decrease the fuelwood demand by 40% and contribute the conservation of 2.337 hectare of forests.

Project Characteristics and Results
Replication of project activities
Ministry of Environment and Forestry's Generale Directorate of Forest Village Development is now planning to provide financing for house isolation in their credit system.
Notable Community Participation
The local people will be providing all the hand work for insulation. This will also enable them to get to know the technology, with hands on installation as well as how to repair them. Therefore this also has an element of capacity building.
