The St. Martin Pig Farm was set up in 1985 on a portion of State Land to the extent of 10 arpents with a view to alleviating problems of pig breeders in the outskirts of the towns of Beau Bassin/Rose Hill. A pig waste treatment plant was set up in 2003 at the farm for an amount of Rs 8.2 Million by the Government to treat pig effluents, which were causing environmental problems such as odor and ground water pollution. However, since the beginning of 2005 the treatment plant has not been functioning properly as the part of the main underground sewage pipe and the manholes along the line were clogged.

This project is mainly concerned with remedial works at St. Martin Pig Farm for the cleaning and maintenance of the pig waste treatment plant. The scope of works includes cleaning of pipes, manholes, digesters and sedimentation basins; construction of additional manholes, supply and fixing of 46 sieves and 2 sump tanks; increasing the slopes for conduct pipes as well as sizes of pipes; and other minor works.The objectives of the project are mainly to bring back the pig waste treatment plant into optimum operation with an enhanced sewage pipe line for the treatment of pig effluents and to ward off environmental problems linked with pig effluents.
