FSM: Mand Community Project for Agricultural Biodiversity Conservation (Phase I)
FSM: Mand Community Project for Agricultural Biodiversity Conservation (Phase I)
The project site is at Mand, Madolenihmw in the state of Pohnpei, FSM. There is a lack of awareness about the importance of growing a diversity of food crops for environmental and health reasons. Also there is growing concern about conservation of traditional crop germplasm and increasing rarity of traditional food crops. The project will aim in developing of improved charcoal oven and increasing awareness of the importance of local food and for a diversity of local food crops, and impact could also be made on provision of sustainable livelihoods in the community, including savings through import substitutes and through small income generation projects using local foods. A global health project, supported by the United Nations and the Centre for Indigenous People's Nutrition and Environment was initiated by the Centre of Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment with 12 case studies through out the world. Pohnpei was selected as one of the 12 case studies for this project, and Mand, Madolenihmw Pohnpei, FSM was selected as te project site(rural community about 500 in population).
