Bukima Ward Schools Compounds Improvement Project, in Musoma Rural District
Bukima Ward Schools Compounds Improvement Project, in Musoma Rural District
The project purpose is to strengthen the capacities of two primary schools along the lake to overcome environmental threats with negative impacts to Lake Victoria through addressing effects of deforestation and use of industrial agro-chemicals. The project will operate in two schools of Majita and Butata in Musoma Rural district. The project will enhance environmental education and community health education to the two schools, support schools to establish tree woodlots at their respective compounds to minimize soil erosion and act as wind breakers during wind period and will promote organic farming activities in schools to minimize the non point source pollution entering the lake from the excessive use of industrial agro-chemicals. The above schools and the neighbouring villages are threatened by non point sources pollution resulting from the agricultural activities done by both the schools and the community members along the lake; there is excessive trees cutting in search of fuel and extra income from sale of charcoal or firewood, this has affected even school woodlots and school reserved areas.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
?Project management, book keeping and report writing skills, ?Trees and tree nursery management training to the community, ?Organic farming techniques ?Community health education
Project sustainability
?The project will create community awareness towards the activities conducted by the project through exhibition and demonstrations which will create a community interest towards the project activities, ?Through school pupils the project will sensitize communities to establish woodlots which will ensure project sustainability because the community will be harvesting timber and charcoal from their woodlots and not from the schools, ?The project will produce more tree seedlings than its requirement for selling purposes. Sale of tree seedlings to the community at a subsidized price will also ensure sustainability because the realized income from the sale of tree seedlings will be used to acquire other immediate school or project requirements, ?Some members of the school committees are village government councils and ward development committee?s members. The project will use those members to facilitate formulation of community woodlots conservation by laws which will serve the woodlots from fire and human and animals encroachment,
