Strengthening the Capacity of Nsunga Ward Communities to Conserve the Minziro Forests Project, Bukoba Rural District

The project purpose is to strengthening the capacities of the Nsunga ward communities to plan and implement sustainable environmental conservation of Minziro forests. The project will cover Nsunga ward in Missenyi Division, Bukoba Rural district. Minziro forest is currently facing the threat posed by the community in search for the charcoal, firewood, grass for animals/roofing and timber. The above mentioned economic ventures and the uncontrolled bush fires have so many environmental threats to the forests because they are conducted in an unsustainable way. It is the aim of MDA to work with other institutions like CBOs, government departments responsible for the environment, forestry, fisheries and agriculture to conserve the Minziro forests. To rescue the ecosystem of the Minziro forests Mutukula Development Association intends to mobilize the communities within Nsunga ward to work together to solve the current negative situation. Some of the activities to be conducted by the MDA include planting of trees, establishment of woodlots, addressing sustainable agriculture and addressing soil erosion measures and control, mobilize and sensitize communities on environmental conservation practices, support the capacity to establish income generating activities like bee keeping and reduce community pressure to the Minziro forests through establishment of community woodlots.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

All community members are participating in the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Emphasis on multipurpose trees production and provision of bee harvesting equipment and training to the youth groups will earn project beneficiaries the necessary income which will be used to improve the community livelihood.

Project sustainability

One of the MDA?s strategies to ensure the project sustainability will be to train and involve local leaders at all stages of the project. If the local leaders are trained and get involved in the project implementation, monitoring and evaluation the environment conservation will remain a day today activity. emphasized by the village leaders. If that is the case then the forests conservation will be tabled and discussed in village meeting and other occasions during and after the projects. Community committees will be formulated trained and involved in the project activities too, the above committee will take over the responsibility of the project management at the end of the donor support. The nature of the project itself makes it self sustainable for after some time the planted trees will be producing money. Community members will be trained on how to harvest their trees in a sustainable way i.e. harvesting by replacing with new ones. All the above strategies are in place to make sure the project activities are continuing after the donor support is terminated.

Promotion of trees planting, filling the gaps in the Minziro forests and implementing forest management activities though done at a low scale but they all have a global environment impact,

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project benefits include Increased cross-border relationships among the CBOs working in the microgrants program in Tanzania and Uganda; increased awareness of community in environmental conservation, reduced pressure to the Minziro forests, increased community income realized from sale of bee products, increased vegetation cover as a result of established woodlots. The above benefits indicate how the project ideas have incorporated innovative financial mechanisms

Gender Focus

The project gives more focus to women whereby out of 50 people, 30 of them were women and out of 23 people 15 of them were women who attended exposure visit on sustainable forest management and received training on small business mangement respectively.
