Waste Management in Busia Town Council

The aim of the project is to improve the management of solid waste in Busia Town Council which is located on the border of Uganda and Kenya. Poor waste management in this town pollutes water sources which flow into Lake Victoria and into River Nile. The project trained community members in waste management, assisted to transport waste to dumping sites, and demonstrated the recycling of polythene materials into useful products such as chairs.

Project Characteristics and Results

Replication of project activities

The Town Council Authorities are replicating the project activities in some of the parishes where YES has not yet worked.

Policy Influence

The Town Council Authorities have instituted a by-law where offenders are charged a fine for improper waste disposal.

Notable Community Participation

The community is participating in waste management by cleaning the areas around their residence or business premises and dumping the waste in gazetted places. The change in cleanliness of the town streets depends largely on the community's participation in cleaning the town daily.

Planning non gef grant

The organization is writing a bigger project proposal with more emphasis on recycling polythene materials at a larger scale.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project has demonstrated that recycled polythene material can be turned into useful products such as chairs and ceiling boards that could be sold for income.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project has raised awareness about the need for improved waste management and its impact to the global environment through radio talks, drama shows, meetings and training workshops.

Project sustainability

The project is implemented in close collaboration with the Busia Town Council authorities who are promoting the activities of YES in other parishes that the project is not covering. The re-cycling component of the project should lead to increased sustainability when the project starts getting income from the recycled products. Some of the income will be used to equip the volunteers and to fuel the garbage collection truck.

Gender Focus

The project is targeting both men and women because they are all involved in waste disposal. The women are mostly involved in waste management at home while the men are more concerned with waste management at their places of work, in the town.

Policy Impact

The town council has developed a by-law whereby a fine is imposed for improper waste disposal.

Capacity - Building Component

Thirty volunteers, seven of them women, were trained in waste management and they are actively collecting waste on a regular basis. Over 1,300 community members have been trained in waste management during meetings, through drama, and radio talk shows.

Project Results

Thirty volunteers, seven of them women, were trained in waste management and they are actively collecting waste on a regular basis.

Sixty bins for waste collection were placed at the shops and most of the customers are using them.

Samples of plastic chairs and a ceiling board were made for demonstration purposes using recycled polythene waste materials.

The streets of Busia Town are now cleaner, compared to the situation before the project started.
