Kamasta Bicycle Route. Promotion of Ecological Bicycle Tourism and Rural Entrepreneurship
Project objective: Introduction of the climate change mitigation activities in Kamasta landscape protected area through creation of attractive infrastructure of bicycle tourism, managing the flows of visitors in the area and its neighborhood and reducing social exclusion by enhancing entrepreneurship and business activities of local people.
Project site: Mol?tai district, Giedraiciai neighborhood, Ambrazi?kiai, ?alvariai, Stalieri?kiai, Pu?alotai, Papi?kiai, Rad?i?nai, and Vilkaraisciai villages.
Project activities: selection of cycling rout and its marking, construction of small infrastructure along it (information signs and places for short rest), nature management activities strict nature reserve of Oak wood, training of local people to improve their business skills and demonstrational seminars on simple environment friendly rural household technologies, environmental education activities.
Project results: 30 km length bicycle path with 12 places for short rest has been established, a map of the rout was published. The new rout is advertised through tourist information center, internet, mass media. 0,5 ha of Oak wood was maintained. 5 trainings and 3 demonstrational seminars were organized. 7 thematic rural homesteads (House of Bees, Poultry House, House of Bread, House of Bread Baking, House of Frogs, Ecological Farm, Cattle Farm) were established and received some simple equipment to be able to serve individual bicycle tourists and excursions and this way to get earn additional income. 2 innovative biotualets, 4 special composters, solar panels were installed, informational centre from soil were constructed in those households. Community had launched its homepage, and several information materials were published. Community members took very active participation in all activities of the project.
It is expected, that the route will be visited by 150 cyclists per year (concentrated, directed and regulated), and this way negative human impact in the area of 500 ha of Kamasta landscape protected area will be reduced.
