Kukuuma Butonde Environmental Support Project
Kukuuma Butonde Environmental Support Project
The project objectives are: improved capacity of communities and the organization?s members in order to improve environmental management; increased numbers of multipurpose trees; reduction in cutting down of trees for firewood; and improved water conservation in order to control soil erosion. The project is up-scaling activities that were conducted with support from the Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project ((LVEMP). The project will improve management of the existing tree-nursery; purchase and distribute water tanks for rain-water harvesting at household level; pilot the use of solar ovens as an alternative to firewood; purchase audio-visual equipment for environmental education and training community members; and visit similar projects in Uganda and Tanzania to learn from their experiences.

Notable Community Participation
The community members meet once a week to work in the project nursery. They share the work and have managed to keep the nursery in good condition for more than 3 years - with and without project funds. They occasionally sell tree seedlings and share the income.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The group raises seedlings for their own planting and for sale in order to get income. The demonstration in rain-water harvesting will assist community members to get clean water for domestic consumption.
