Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in Maguacua Community, District of Dondo, Sofala Province
The project is to be implemented by ADMUS in coordination with district agriculture services in Maguacua village, located in Dondo district in southern Sofala province. The village is characterized by an open forest and undifferentiated savanna, sandy soils of poor fertility, and scarce wildlife due to intensive bushfires and illegal offtake of wild animals. Communities rely mostly on subsistence farming, and production of charcoal to support their household income. Slash and burn agriculture is a common practice inducing to deforestation and continuous clearing of new areas for farming. ADMUS aims to intervene by promoting sustainable use of local resources by: raising environmental consciousness at community level as a measure to safeguard biodiversity resources of Maguacua village; promoting sustainable production of charcoal by establishing resource user groups, and introducing innovative technologies that reduce consumption of firewood?s; introducing conservation agriculture practices as a measure to reduce deforestation and clearing of new areas for farming, and simultaneously introduce farming of vegetables to diversify diet supply; and introducing livestock breeding programs to reduce illegal offtake of wild animals, and allow game restocking, and provision of animal protein.
At least 50 families of Maguacua community will benefit directly from the project, which intended to be up scaled and replicated to neighbouring communities as a measure to increase project?s positive impacts.
