Participatory Rural Appraisal and Environmental Education in Galinha Community, Muanza District, Sofala Province
The administrative post of Galinha is facing various environmental problems caused by socioeconomic activities that lead to environmental degradation, and unsustainable resource use. The project site is facing invasion problems by illegal bushmeat hunters, and charcoal producers that overexploit wildlife resources. These problems are aggravated by recurrent bushfires, and inadequate farming practices that lead to environmental degradation. The project will revert this scenario through use of participatory rural appraisal techniques to identify the major environmental management constraints faced by Galinha communities, and propose local mitigating solutions using sustainable resource use practices, rising environmental awareness at community level, improving farming, and livestock production techniques, promoting reforestation, and use of non timber forest products. The project will ultimately promote establishment of community groups, and collaborative management systems.
The project is to be implemented by ADS - Acção para o Desenvolvimento Social, considering a holistic and integrated management approach involving various entrepreneurs working in Galinha area to seek technical support and maximize benefits.
