Collaborative Management of Coastal Biodiversity Resources in Marimba da Praia Area in Cabo Delgado Province
Collaborative Management of Coastal Biodiversity Resources in Marimba da Praia Area in Cabo Delgado Province
The northern coast of Cabo Delgado province is rich in coastal-marine biodiversity with more than 55 genera. Inadequate resource use practices by local communities pose a serious threat to the environmental integrity of the area. The area is faced with over-exploitation of its fish stocks, harvest of mangrove poles, logging, illegal offtake of bush meat, bushfires, and extensive farming are among the activities that contribute to loss of biodiversity, land degradation and poverty. Ultimately communities are faced with rupture of their livelihood support alternatives.

Gecorena aims to intervene by raising environmental awareness and education at community level (training, and establishment of collaborative management committees) for communities to intervene in sustainable use of natural resources of both coastal-marine, and terrestrial ecosystems of the project site. The project will also educate communities about environmental policy issues, gender balance, and alternatives for increase of household income.

The project is to be implemented by Gecorena in collaboration with local authorities and tourism entrepreneurs, as a measure to promote an integrated resource use.
