Shadow of Life Project ? Reforestation, Environmental Education and Erosion Control in Machubo and Marracuene Areas in Maputo Province
Shadow of Life Project ? Reforestation, Environmental Education and Erosion Control in Machubo and Marracuene Areas in Maputo Province
The project is to be implemented by Khensani Association, directly in Machubo and Marracuene-Sede administrative posts, with a total population of 41,000 habitants. These areas are bordered by the Indian Ocean and crossed by Incomati River, in between these there is an extensive area with loose, and movable sand dunes prone to erosion by winds, and rains. These sand dunes as well the local vegetation provide a beautiful and high value area for tourism, contributing to the socio-economic importance of the area. Although this potential, the population is facing problems of absolute poverty with large indices of unemployment. Associated to these, the area is facing a continuously degradation due to tree felling for production of charcoal and firewood, uncontrolled bushfires, soil erosion and illegal offtake of animals.

To address these issues, the project will primarily focus on reforestation with native, exotic and fruit tree nurseries as a mean to protect against soil erosion and secure a health environment, avoid desertification, reduce pressure over wildlife resources and fight poverty by providing diet supply and marketing for income generation. The promotion of fishing activities is included for income generation and to improve livelihood support. The project will also demonstrate seedling, planting, and pests controlling technologies, and will raise awareness to the community on the need to protect the environment. Further specific activities are the promotion of community environmental activists and the establishment of local associations with participation of private entrepreneurs, the community, and local authorities.

A total of fifty families and two hundred fifty people will benefit directly from the project. Further, the project will cover an area of 883 km2 with an estimated population of 52,349 habitants from the Marracuene district. Land degradation, erosion and pressure under natural resources will be significantly reduced, while at the time the community will start new alternative activities for income generation and livelihood support which shall rise a growing in economic terms.
