Promotion of Agroforestry Technologies to Fight Deforestation, and Improve Soil Fertility in Boane District, Maputo Province
The project will be implemented within the Maputaland Center of Endemism, in Manguiza and Mahubo villages, which are part of Boane district, with an estimated population of 3,088 inhabitants. Livelihoods rely mostly on overexploitation of forest resources leading to biodiversity loss of wildlife, and increasing land degradation due to deforestation and impoverishment of soils. To address these threats the project will focus on reforestation and promotion of technologies that improve soil fertility, combined with environmental consciousness at community. The primarily goal is to mitigate deforestation, land degradation, and biodiversity loss, and promote soil, water and wildlife conservation through sound land use practices. Other specific activity will be community training in agroforestry technologies and its implementation to improve soil fertility (mixed cropping, relay cropping, improved land resting, and biomass transfer), promote rehabilitation of degraded forests, and establish small woodlots.
The project will be implemented by an integrated collaborative board involving district authorities, community leaders, community members, and technical experts from the Associação para a Transformação Rural, which will provide technical expertise. Each stakeholder will have a specific role and will work with specific target groups.
The project will directly benefit 150 families of peasants, and charcoal producers. One hundred families will be involved in the establishment of small Woodlots, and fifty in the implementation of technologies that improve soil fertility. Other indirect benefits are also expected to all project stakeholders, and a platform for replication of best practices will be considered.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Environmental consciousness at community level is seen as a basic tool to mitigate land degradation and promote sustainable use of natural resources. Environmental awareness rising campaigns and training of community members are covering the first stage of the project and will focus on identification of areas to undertake reforestation activities, areas to improve soil fertility, area for the establishment of the tree nursery and production of agroforestry species for various purposes.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Introduction of innovative agroforestry activities to mitigate loss biodiversity and assure new livelihood support activities. Together these will increase and secure household income.
