Land Protection in Vilankulo Municipality to Control Land Degradation, and Coastal Erosion
Land Protection in Vilankulo Municipality to Control Land Degradation, and Coastal Erosion
Vilankulo village is located in northern Inhambane province. The major socio-economic activities are artisanal fishing, and subsistence farming. The area is an open bay exposed to the action of strong winds, waves, and cyclones. Intensive tourism markets, fishing, boats, and ships movement also contribute to the fragility of the area. Under these circumstances the project aims to intervene on controlling and preventing land degradation and coastal erosion. Two main activities were considered: build a wall barrier of one hundred meters along parts of the coastline of Vilankulo Municipality; and establish a tree nursery of ornamental trees (acacias, and casuarinas), fruit trees (coconut palms), and flowering plants to reforest coastal area of Vilankulo village covered by the project. Awareness rising at community level on the need to protect the environment and promotion of income generation activities through marketing of that fruit trees, fruits, flowers, and ornamental plants were also considered as an alternative livelihood support and to guarantee sustainability of the project.

The project is to be implemented by ANAVIL partnered with the village council, the district services of environment, the agriculture services, and households. Tourism entrepreneurs, volunteer labour from the community, expertise from the Municipality authorities will also be involved to secure continued project activities, and its sustainability.
