Raising awareness and building capacity of 100 farmers on reduction of agrochemical in urban agriculture practices in Qalqilia city in the West Bank

A project on building the capacity of 100 farmers in Qalqilia city on agro-biodiversity conservation and technical issues related to urban agricultural practices. It will facilitate establishing a new networking to support urban agriculture practices in Qalqilia. It is expected that more than 5 active related NGO will participate in this imitative. The project will contribute to improving living conditions for 100 farmers through providing them with environmentally- sound techniques and skills related to agro-biodiversity practices in urban areas. It will also contribute to minimizing the usage of agro-biodiversity practices in urban areas. It will also contribute to minimizing the usage of agro-chemicals in urban agricultural practices in the project area through promoting environmentally-sound techniques. For this purpose the project beneficiaries will be supported by necessary tools and organic-based material to promote organic agriculture in urban areas.

Notable Community Participation

Establishing ?project Steering Committee? to monitor the strategic directions of the project and facilitate community contacts and that would represent local committees and organizations, municipality of Qalqilia, Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Quality Authority.

Policy Impact

Establishing networking in cooperation with Qalqilia Municipality to formulate integrated management plan for urban agriculture in Qalqilia. It is expected more than 5 active related NGOs will participate in series of meetings to empower such networking.

Capacity - Building Component

Increasing the capacity through conducting five training courses for 100 farmers (men and women). The participants will be divide into five groups and will merely receive theatrical background on agro biodiversity conservation, adverse impact of intensive use of agro-chemicals, integrated pest management control, sustainable land management, solar sterilization, compost production, and water and soil pollution.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Raising awareness through Develop, publish and distribute a funding manual that demonstrate the projects outcomes and impacts.

Project Results

1. A networking relation was built with at least 100 farmers (females and males) of the population of Qalqilia city and introducing them to the importance of safe agriculture (organic) in improving environmental conditions in the city as well as the economic benefit accruing to the farmers.
2. 100 farmers were trained on the best ways to optimize organic agriculture and how to preserve the environment, human health and the production of safe agricultural products.
3. Working on the establishment of a farmers? cooperative for producing organic vegetables (safe products), where two foundation meetings were held and with the attendance of 20 farers from the project beneficiaries and recently the work is focusing on the registration the cooperative and then to engage them in PFU programmes to take advantage of PFU programmes such as the savings and Credit, collective purchasing , health service, Recovering the Value added and also water and the Environment program, which is considered to be the core of their work.
4. The Distribution of organic pesticides and equipment from which 103 farmers benefited amounted by 200 USD for each farmer, where the contribution of the project was 75% and the contribution of each beneficiary was 25%, which was used for the cultivation of one acres of land, so that the project contributed in the cultivation of more than 100 acres within the framework of safe agriculture.
5. The analysis and knowledge of soil quality and problems for 87 farmers of the population of Qalqilia city, as well as four water wells in the same area of the project.
6. The preparation of a specialized consulting booklet for farmers, consumers and all segments of society aim to acquaint them with all phases of the project and the results that have been achieved, especially in the economic aspects from which the farmers learned and also the contribution of the project in preserving the environment from pollution and the preservation of human health.
