Sustainable Land Management and Reduction of Land Degradation in Landslide Areas by Foundation for Rural Community Development

This project by the Foundation for Rural Community Development (FRCD) will focus on promoting sustainable land management among the community in order to reduce land degradation in Watapatha, a landslide-affected area. FRCD will construct concrete drains according to contour lines in order to prevent soil erosion.

Additionally, in order to improve the livelihoods of those affected, FRCD will start site nurseries, giving bata, vetiva and puwak to selected community members.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Landslides were affecting the community?s livelihoods. Therefore, FRCD introduce activities such as bee-keeping, mushroom cultivation and tea land development in order to create a sustainable livelihood for those affected.

Gender Focus

Most of the affected women were taught on how they can be self-employed and contribute to the family income. Therefore these women could support the community?s actions to reduce landslides.

Capacity - Building Component

The community committee was trained on how to minimize landslides in the area.

Notable Community Participation

Those who were affected by the landslides came together as a community committee. All the construction activities are completed by this committee, which provides labor as well as their technical knowledge in creating the drains.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

When doing awareness programs on landslides, FRCD also makes the community aware of global environment issues and how they can help protect the environment.

Policy Impact

When planning and implementing the project, FRCD has to consider national policies on landslides. They also have promoted the recommendation of the National Building Research Organization (NBRO).

the community adopts similar measures in other areas whenever appropriate. the community also maintains nuseries of plants and sells them

Replication of project activities

these measures were executed under the guidance of the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) therefore, the measures can be readily adopted in other areas facing similar risks of landslides

Project Results

The project built stonewalls to reinforce vulnerable slopes and a comprehensive drainage network to collect water and direct it to less vulnerable area.

billboards displaying warnings were erected to designate landslide prone areas
