Sustainable Land Management Practices with Community Participation by Beacon of the East Social Services Organization
This project is focused on minimizing land degradation by encouraging the community in Koralai Pattu, in Batticaloa, to focus on organic home gardening and community forestry. The land has been degraded due to land mismanagement and sand mining.
For the home gardens, 100 beneficiaries in seven villages were selected. They were given fencing wire, fencing posts, cow dung for manure and seeds. BESSO will provide each of the beneficiaries with a toolkit on how to best manage their home garden. BESSO will also give them compost bins made out of concrete to prevent sand and animals from entering the compost. By training the community on alternative and more environmentally-friendly agricultural methods, land degradation will be minimized.
