Reducing Greenhouse Gases from the Ground Transport System in Sri Lanka by Clean Air Sri Lanka (CASL)
Reducing Greenhouse Gases from the Ground Transport System in Sri Lanka by Clean Air Sri Lanka (CASL)
Air pollution is a serious problem in Sri Lanka. Almost 64% of the air pollutants are emitted by the transport sector, contributing to global warming. Furthermore, air quality in certain urban areas has deteriorated to the extent that it poses a significant threat to human health. Recognizing the threat of vehicle emissions to the public health, the Government of Sri Lanka published the revised Vehicle Emission Standards, Fuel quality standards and Vehicle Specification Standards for Importation.

However, even though it is a massive national level programme, it has not received the public awareness that it deserves. Therefore it is urgent to conduct several public awareness programmes targeting the direct stakeholders. This project proposal by Clean Air Sri Lanka intends to implement a one and a half year programme and conduct awareness programmes targeting the following stakeholders: vehicle owners, school children and policy makers.

It is expected that with the successful implementation of this project, awareness regarding air pollution will increase, which will reduce greenhouse gases emitted by the transport system and lead to an improvement in air quality in Sri Lanka.
