RMI: Namdrik Atoll Pearl Farm and Lagoon Management Plan for Community Revitalization
Namdrik pearl oyster is genetically distinct from other pearl oyster population in the RMI and the rest of the pacific. This project is to protect and hopefully restore this unique population of pearl oysters for the sake of preserving biodiversity and enabling Namdrik Islanders to establish a pearl farm as an alternative to over-exploiting fisheries and to provide economic alternatives to bolster efforts to protect other key species such as turtles. This project proposes to begin a community based, participatory process to develop a lagoon management which will include revitalization the old Namdrik pearl farm as part of the livelihood components of the plan. The community will bring in specialists to advise on development of plan, build capacity and re-start the pearl farm.
